Spindle Top

A spinning top featuring an aluminum superstructure and a steel body designed to lower the center of gravity, improving stability by minimizing the material density of oscillations at the tip. Sitting between the bottom of the wooden inner lining and the interior of the steel outer case is a concealed magnet that captures the top to its resting position. Hand-turned on a metal lathe. Upon completion, I purchased a high end computer-machined lightweight titanium spinning top to compare its performance with mine. Over the course of several trials, the spinning top I made at the metal shop exhibited longer spin times 80% of the time.
